  • GA-EP45-DS3 Memory errors after upgrade to 4 x 2GB RAM PC-8500 (8Gb)

    Hi,

    I recently upgrade the memory from 4GB (2 x 2GB Geil 1066MHz CL5) to 8GB (2 x 2GB Kingston HyperX 1066MHz CL5) and I'm experimenting some memory errors.

The memory is paired in the same channel for each vendor:

    Channel A: Geil
    Channel B: Kingston

I ran memtest86 and with the memory set at the correct speed and latency (1066MHz and 5-5-5-15) I always have the same error in the test no 7. It's something weird because the errors are always the same and in the same position.

No matters what pattern is addressed, the fail is alwais in 00001000 and the fail can happen on all the four modules... If you remain 1 to 4 bit of the good value you have the bad value found in memory.

I think that it should be a bad setting in the BIOS.

    Throubleshotting:

I tried to grow the MCH core voltage to 1.4 without success, I also tried with different memory voltages, and then I tried several configurations posted on this forum but without success. Tried the most of the configurations with Performance Enhance: Standard to avoid problems.

I can avoid this memory errors if I set:

    1.
Defaults from bios with DDR operating at 800MHz. No errors in complete all tests.
    MCH Core: 1.1
    DRAM Voltage: 2.2
    Latency: 5-5-5-15
    All the rest: Auto
    Performance Enhance: Turbo

    2.
    MCH Core: 1.4
    DRAM Voltage: 2.3
    System Memory Multiplier: 3.33D (1000)
    Latency: 5-7-7-15
    TRead: 6
    Memory Profile: 1066
    Performance Enhance: Turbo

In this option used a DRAM profile not according to CPU FSB.

    3.
    MCH Core: 1.4
    DRAM Voltage: 2.2
    System Memory Multiplier: (800)
    Latency: 4-4-4-12
    Performance Enhance: Xtreme

Do you have any idea to try and run the memory in 1066MHz?

If not, what of the three options that I'm abble to run without errors should be the best looking to performance?

    A lot of thanks!

The first thing you must do is test the new kit alone.
Then each kit, in it's channel alone.

In a recent experiments I have done, mixing 2 different modules that their specs look identical, I could never get them to run at the rated DDR-1066.

I agree, I would test each kit one by one, or even each stick one by one, that would be how to find the issue as it sounds like one of the sticks is faulty since the error is always the same

        Re: GA-EP45-DS3 Memory errors after upgrade to 4 x 2GB RAM PC-8500 (8Gb)

        Ok.

        I made the suggested tests:

        - Tested the new Kit alone in his channel (B)
        - Tested old Kit alone in channel A.

I didn't make the test with only one module because it passes the dual channel with both.

It should be something relationed with the amount of RAM (8Gb), I think. Because with 4GB works fine with default settings in turbo performance and only forcing the memory at 1066MHz...

I'm playing with the adjustments tRRD, tWTR, tWR,tRFC,tRTP, tREAR and latency. In the time I make changes I can see the system more stable or more volatile.

The speed of the memory varies in memtest86 according to the changes, and I obtained a set with 4885MB/s of read, the same with the adjustment in DDR800 perfomance Xtreme, then the system is quite stable but drops errors sometimes.

I think it should be some setting or voltage because always fail in test7 "Random number Sequence"...

I have in the BIOS a lot of settings like 'tRD Phase0 adjustment', 'tRDPhase1 Adjustment', 'Trd2rd Different Rank', etc...

Do you think it could be fixed with one of these parameters?

        A lot of thanks!

It may be the amount of memory or it may be the fact you are using different memory, we will never know unless you wish to spend(waste) money just to know if it is.

          Set performance Enhance to standard.
You may try timings 4-4-4-12, but with the same voltage needed for 1066.
Set tRD(Static tRead Value in BIOS, Performance Level in MemSet) to 7, both channels, and see if rhos works.
If it does try tRD 6 for both channels.
MCH Core 1.16-1.28v lowest possible stable.

If the above does not help, try this for 800Mhz and see if you can get that going, then if so I'll advise again for 1066 so you can try that.
