Yes, like Chike said, I just pried off the thin sheet metal HS cover. Wrap a jeweler's screwdiver (flat head) with some kitchen towel for padding and carefully remove it. It's held on with two strips of double sided tape.

I was actually impressed by how good that tape was. Nearly two years later, I stuck them back on using the original tape and they held with no issues. :)

Once you have the HS fins exposed, air from a side fan should be plenty to keep it cool.

This is what the heat sinks look like underneath:

      Re: Ep45-ud3p/e8600 500fsb ???

I never could get my first MOBO to to run 500X9 @ any setting. This second board will run @ those settings but core temps are hitting 80c. I had to use AS5 TIM because I can't find my MX-2. I know thats only good for 3c drop in temps. I'm looking for water blocks now and may WC NB and CPU. I have alot of WC parts left over from when I WC'd my UD9. May be able to save some money. Anyway I had to up Vcore to 1.425v to have any stability at all @ 450X9 settings. I'll continue that QUEST when I resolve temp issues. At the 4.27GHz (450X9.5) settings I'm still not 24/7 stable. Those darn ref. voltages are eating my lunch. It may MCH core and MCH ref I'm having problems with. I passed 20 passes of LinX but failed Prime 95 Blend after 1 hour. By the way, I do have a side panel fan blowing on NB. (Antec 1200 case) My sound card may be blocking some of the air flow. May go ahead and remove hat off NB. Thanks wibujo

With the same CPU you need more vcore?
If you know which FFT size caused failure you can shorten the time and run only that size.

          Re: Ep45-ud3p/e8600 500fsb ???

Yeh the "blue hats" may be more trouble than theyre worth, fortunately my mbrd came without them ;).

Seriously tho,Ive also had nb cooled with a 45 degree angled fan,it also blew on the memory too,and I dont think I would have achieved 500 fsb stable (x8) cpu without it .
This was before I installed my nb cooler..
At that time anything over 1.4v cpu on c2q was frowned on(on air),now it seems an ok max of 1.45,Im not interested enough to try experimenting again, tho I did run over 1.45 thru my Q8400.

TIM, the stuff that came with my zalmann cooler is supposed to be among the top 5,i could probably find the link for the ,like 20 top paste tests if you dot already have it..

Water cooling will ,I think make a whole different ball game ,but my feeling on air at least is the chipset bandwith limitation and the relationship between mch ,fsb cpu and memory.

Anything that tries to force something over 11gb/s(on 45 chipset) seems to be very difficult to achieve ,at least Ive never seen it on air with c2q.
fsb raising increases it,cpu raising increases it,and memory overclocking, tighter timings /pl do also.
Anything over500/2000 fsb ,i havent seen quads working reliably with on air.
I think the maximum people used to post reaching and running well was about 4.125-4.2Ghz not using a 500 cpu ref but more like 480-495.and a multiplier higher than 8.

Duals are better cos of fewer cores and a higher possible cpu Vcore, but there isnt that much experience, heh or interest anymore in wc on the ep 45 in the forum.
