  • EFI boot issues AMD A8-3850 Gigabyte GA-A75-UD4H

im not sure if this is a motherboard issue or just my lack of understanding of the EFI bios or an issue with linux

upon installing the OS and reboot
shows "loading operating system" this stays on the screen for quite some time and then i get a flashing cursor in the top left of the screen
    and then nothing

I am trying to install a clean install of Ubuntu 11.04 desktop AMD 64
    not dual boot

the bios on my Motherboard supports EFI
i have set EFI for CD/DVD boot for the Ubuntu live CD

    Here is the hardware:

    AMD A8-3850
    Gigabyte GA-A75-UD4H
    Gskill DDR3 1866 F3-14900CL9D-8GBXL (CL9-10-9-28)
WD 2TB sata - installing ubuntu on sda
    WD 3TB sata - sdb
    pioneer dvd

at first i thought the issue was support of the 3tb drive but i now have the same issue with the 2tb drive
a ran the ubuntu live cd install but when it reboots i dont get any menu
shows "loading operating system" this stays on the screen for quite some time and then i get a flashing cursor in the top left of the screen

i think it has something to do with the efi partition / grub2 on the boot drive
based on post the ubuntu 11.04 live cd doesn't create this properly

im really confused will all of the info on efi / grub boot partition

i was wondering if someone could direct me on the specific steps on how to get ubuntu to boot
i am a bit familar with linux but i have never had to struggle with boot issues

Re: EFI boot issues AMD A8-3850 Gigabyte GA-A75-UD4H

I am no Linux expert but here are some things you can try. I have installed linux but dont know all the rules or exactly how to use linux.

First make sure you hdd that you want linux installed onto is in the first sata port should be SataII_0. Make sure you cd/dvd drive is in the last sata port sataII_5.

In bios set EFI to auto or cd which ever the option is.

Set boot order to hdd, disable, disable.

To boot off the cd/dvd at start up press "F12" key and then select your cd/dvd drive.

Also set the sata port to use ahci.

With these settings You should be able to boot from cd, install os to hdd, then boot from hdd after install.
