  • Cant overclock cpu after gfx upgrade. need help

You guys will see what system I'm running in my sig. Just the cpu is running stock and the 580 has now been replaced with the 6990

    I recently upgraded from my gtx580 to a 6990.

The 6990 runs like a beast, but i'm thinking its being held back by the 3.2ghz cpu.I usually run at 4.5ghz day to day but when I entered my oc settings which I know is 100percent stable after putting the 6990 in, the system(bios) resets to default.

I've tried everything now. I can boot up go into the bios etc etc, but as soon as I change something(anything) and restart I get "your previous overclock has failed message".

I've gone into the bios and disable usb keyboard, mouse, usb storage(read on a forum online). It didnt help...
I've gone and disabled all powersavings and that didnt help...

I've even used default bios settings and restarted(that works fine), then I entered the bios and just "enabled" bclk overclocking(didnt overclock at all) and saving and restarting resulted in the same "fail overclocking message"...

Using another card works fine, and I know its not the PSU because I've run 3x580s on it just last week.
I'm going to test tomorrow with a more "lightweight" gts 450 and see if that changes anything.

I'm really bummed as I was really looking forward to the 6990.

Does anyone have any ideas or have had a similar problem?

Does everything you have tried includes clearing CMOS? I'd start at that.

What were the exact steps you took to uninstall the Nvidia drivers/software?
If/When you clear the CMOS, be sure to start over with Optimized bios settings.
Just want to be sure you didn't overlook the basics.

In addition to the above, a little more IOH or ICH may help as well, but do the above first.

Re: Cant overclock cpu after gfx upgrade. need help

Hi all, thanks for the responses.

I dont think you guys understand... I sold my gtx580 and obviously uninstalled the drivers via the nvidia tool. I then set my bios to defaults as I always do this when changing parts. I then proceeded to install the 6990, made sure that I had two 8pin power connectors plugged in and booted up the pc.
Everything when smoothly and I arrived in windows 7 and ran some benchies to see how it performs.
After about 1 hour I wanted to see if my processor was holding the card back since my 3dmark 11 scores were only 8867 and my vantage scores were just below 30k.

I restarted, went into the bios and changed my settings like I always do... However this time the pc failed to boot and reset my setting to default. Worried about this, since I've never had a problem oc'ing with this board or processor I reset the bios to default and went back into the bios.

This time I only changed one setting. I just enabled blck overclocking(no actual overclocking) and the pc failed to boot and reset itself... Any setting I change regarding voltages, overclocking, memory, etc results in the same thing....

I've even downgraded my bios to Fg2 and FF2 with no difference...

I'm going to get a gts450 today and take the 6990 out and see if the problem persists...

I know its not power related as I've had 2x580sli for over a month without issues and I know it cant be driver problems as it the bootup stage... the drivers havnt been loaded.(just before anyone asks I have uninstalled the ati drivers aswell and tried different ones ranging from 11.4-11.8.

Any other idea's? Really need help here...

The HD6990 is PCI-E 2.1, maybe this can be an issue that need to be fixed in the BIOS.
Try to force PCI-E clock to 100.

Tested with very latest beta BIOS on tweaktown/gigabyte/latest beta? When you flash BIOS untick "keep dmi pool data" and let it rebuild it,then press "alt f12" to make sure both BIOS chips are flashed with the same BIOS version, then load optimized defaults ect and try again, also try with 2 or 3 clicks more iho/ich core voltage,it might help with dual core gpu which I think 6990 is?

Found the problem... seems for some reason my ram started undervolting itself. Upping the ram and qpi voltage fix the problem.

Re: Cant overclock cpu after gfx upgrade. need help

The problem is that I have 2 6gb kits of ram. The one Kingston Hyper X and the other OCZ Platinum. When clear cmos it sets my ram voltage to 1.5 as my qpi default is 1.1(or lower). The qpi needed to be increased before I could raise the ram voltage.

It was just weird since if I didnt raise the qpi voltage and ram voltage I couldnt even enable bclk overclocking in the bios without the system crashing(no overclocking whatsoever was done, just enbabled bclk). Very strange bug, but now that I've found it I now know how to work around it :)
