990FXA-UD3 NorthBridge gets HOT & generates a smell

just installed a 990FXA-UD3 mobo and the NB runs really HOT and generates a smell, almost the same smell as some of those cheap, hot running power supplies generate.

What is a safe max NB temp and, will the smell go away? Thanks

if you have software that can read them temp or if the bios shows a temp I would say around 50c is safe. Is the getting to hot were you can not touch the heatsink with your finger? If you start from a cold boot how long could you keep your finger on it before it gets too hot?

from a cold start, the NB gets very uncomfortable to the touch about 30 seconds after reaching the WIndows 7 desktop, that's with my fingers pressed firm against the heatsink. Once I start any app or game I can no longer keep my fingers on the heatsink. I should mention that I have the CPU overclocked from 3.0GHz to 3.6GHz Athlon II x 3 unlocked to a Phenom II x 4 640

Good thing you mentioned it's overclocked.
Does it get so hot without overclocking?

There is something you can try to do if you are up for it. You can try relplaceing the thermal compound ounder the northbridge heat sink and see if that helps. It may or may not void your warrenty. Maybe some one who knows for sure can chime in or you may want to contact gigabyte support.

try and post some temp readings from aida64 50-60c is normal temps,could be because its a new mb that your smelling burning,once its been running a few days it will go,not saying that the nb isnt overheating though but would be nice to see some temps
