  • Very Strange BIOS issue - not keeping setting

    I7 960
X58-UD3R v2 FF BIOS (upgraded from FE)
    12GB Corsair DDR3 1600 (3x4gb)
    2x GTX 460s
    640 WD Black

So this just happened to me today. Was doing a simple BIOS update using @BIOS, upgrade went ok. Rebooted, lost settings, redid them, rebooted. Won't post, rebooted back to the BIOS, and the multiplier went back up! The BIOS is saving ALL my other settings in the MIT menu and advanced integrated menu, but will NOT save the CPU multipler setting (I run 200x19, but upon reboot it jacks it back to 24x).

I tried disabling Intel turbo, and it worked ONCE, but did not work again (reset it back to 24x). I disabled all the power saving options too. (C1E), etc.

I have found no other posts about this. Bad CMOS battery? Bad BIOS chip? HELP!

Re: Very Strange BIOS issue - not keeping setting

did it do it before you updated the bios?? when it fails to store settings does it say overclock error? could be bios bug or you need to clear cmos for 30mins then load optimized defaults and re enter all your bios settings

Re: Very Strange BIOS issue - not keeping setting

It ran perfect and stable before the BIOS update. And yes, it did say over lock error, but they are the exact settings I had b4.

I decided to underclock (170x23) and the settings will stay and boot into Windows. I run CPU-z and it shows what I set. Now get this, if I run real temp, just to check and make sure I was not getting any heat spikes, it shows the multiplier fluctuating erratically between 12 and 23 (14, 18, etc). Mind you I do NOT have speedstep or turbo enabled. And I know real temp is not used to look at CPU multiplier, but that can't be right!

clear CMOS for 30 min or sec?

30 minutes, just to be 100% sure, you mean you disabled eist too? as cpu will still fluctuate if its enabled, could be bios bug if so you can always flash back to previous bios, remember each bios version will be different in needing extra voltage tweaks to remain stable, some bios's need more or less voltage than others

Re: Very Strange BIOS issue - not keeping setting

              Yes, EIST disabled.

I have tried this with both the FF and FG BIOS and it has done it for both. I will take note of the voltages being different for different BIOSs.

              Be back in 20 min!
