  • Flashing backup BIOS

When you flash the backup BIOS (Alt + F12) how do you know you were successful on the Z68 boards? I always get a boot menu afterwards. Different from how the P67 boards worked, yes?

    Re: Flashing backup BIOS

Updateing the backup bios is the same from X58-x79 maybe the same for p45. All use the Alt+F12 to update the backup and Ctrl+f12 to restore main bios from backup.

Make sure you have usb keyboard enabled or try using a PS/2 keyboard. Make sure you are holding the alt key before the system starts and then spam the F12 key.

Here is a video How to update your backup bios on GIGABYTE P67 boards - YouTube

      Re: Flashing backup BIOS

I have watched that video before.
No joy. All I have is a USB keyboard. Actually on this machine it's wireless/USB.
I always get the white boot menu. I'll try plugging in the non-wireless KB.

Yep. Got it with non-wireless. For some reason I thought the KB would work from boot up.

        Thanks again, Ace!

          Re: Flashing backup BIOS

Glad you got it working. Most USB keyboards should work, that is wired ones. But still some people need to use a PS/2 keyboard or a PS/2 adapter.

            Re: Flashing backup BIOS

Sometimes with USB you also can try the right control or ALT keys if left ones don't work for you, and timing is everything on these hot keys.

Of course, some USB devices just don't work no matter what for stuff like this, so it's always nice to keep a USB to PS/2 adapter handy if you only use USB KB and Mice.

                Re: Flashing backup BIOS

Ya, those may be the worst for key strokes like that, because they have to go in right at the beginning and that USB might not be power up fully just right when you need to actually hit the keys.

Glad you got it sorted out though!

                  Re: Flashing backup BIOS

Julian, if you're getting the white boot menu then the BIOS is not being copied to backup. Read this thread to see how these guys helped me. In my case the MOBO wasn't seeing my wireless KB in time to perform the Alt + F12 action and I had to use a plugin KB.
                  Good luck.

I didn't see the link ... so I continued to debug myself the issue myself ...

I was also a victim of the BootLoop (Boot Loop) problem and I RMAed the board. The new board is in the system and it is working.

I flashed the BIOS to F12 using QFlash and a USB stick on my GIGABYTE GA-Z68A-D3H-B3 V1.3.

I was not able to flash the backup BIOS to F12. I tried:
                        1. Pressing ALT+F12
                        2. All through the bootup
                        3. For multiple power up cycles each time
                        4. For each of the following keyboards:
                          1. KVM USB keyboard
                          2. Microsoft PS-2 keyboard (with the KVM USB keyboard connected)
                          3. Chicony USB keyboard (with the KVM USB keyboard and the Microsoft PS-2 keyboard connected)
                          4. Chicony USB keyboard (with the Microsoft PS-2 keyboard connected)

                          Re: Flashing backup BIOS

Sometimes using Right ALT key instead of left also helps, or the other way around if you've been using Right.

But ya, when you were using multiple KB's that may have been confusing it! Great to hear you finally got it done though!

If F12 was the current MAIN BIOS when you flashed the backup, then you know the backup is now F12 too, no need to worry about what it is when you manually flash it as you already know. Only some boards BIOSes show both

To the responder who suggested that F9 shows the Backup BIOS date (sorry, lost the post) ... thanks ... I rechecked and unfortunately I don't think so. I have attached an F9 image for reference. The BIOS date relates to the BIOS version. So no joy (at least not on my board).
