  • Will PCIe 2.1 x16 card work on GA G31M(Pcie 1.0 x16)?

I will but radeon hd 6670. I have Ga g31m s2l with 1 pcie 1.0 x16 slot. The bios is F9c. Will the card work or is a bios update required. Also does this mobo have a bios update?

I've run my MSI gtx 460 video cards in my P35-DS3L and N650SLI-DS4 systems with no problems and had excellent performance even when the video cards were highly overclocked. Both systems have pci-e 1.0 bandwidth and my my video cards are pci-e 2.0 rated.

You shouldn't need to update your bios for your video card.
GIGABYTE - Motherboard - Socket 775 - GA-G31M-S2L (rev. 1.0) has the available bios downloads.

Your 250 watt power supply should be adequate, but you might need a 6-pin pci-e power cable adapter if your video card requires one.
Overclocking your video will probably draw too much power from your psu.

250W is not enough for HD6670. Plz update your PSU and plz refer to AMD website:

Im upgrading to a 450 W PSU. Thanks for the replies. Can anyone surely tell whether this card will work in my mobo without problem? Else any other card with the same price point and performance which will run?My budget is 100 US$

Your main compatibility issue will be your power supply.
Many cheap power supplies can't even put out half of their "rated" power output.

It's unlikely that the video card manufacturer has tested the new card with your motherboard.
A web search for your motherboard will include results from forums and you will find some owners with similar video cards installed with the same motherboard model.

You definitely need to update your BIOS. ATI broke the 2.0 port with 2.1 and it is not backwards compatible without a BIOS update. I read AMD went with 2.1 as it is suppose to be compatible with 3.0 except the speed, and since video cards can't take full advantage of 2.0 yet I guess they decided to go with 2.1 for now.

I see there is an F10f BETA for your board dated June 01, 2009, but I can't find any info on the update, but it should have 2.1 support as this is when 5000series cards came out with 2.1 support. Maybe call Gigabyte to make sure.

In theory, the 250watts should run without issue. I have one in a dell with a 225w psu without issue and the psu runs cool. But not all PSUs are created equal (hence why ATI suggests an overpowered PSU). This card doesn't require a PCIe power cord. It runs off motherboard power which means it runs less than 75watts (typically 60 watts max. for safety).

If your PSU runs a bit warm with it, think about a new PSU. If it runs hot like a hair dryer then turn off immediately and do not turn back on and get a new PSU ASAP. I recommend the best you can afford. 80plus minimum and 80plus platinum for best results. But make sure it at least has 80 plus on it somewhere as it is the only semi-reliable standard for PSUs.
