Did you install win7 into an empty disk partition?
With your system unplugged from the wall outlet, remove and reinstall all internal wires, cables and hardware to ensure that all connections are good. Carefully inspect all wires and cables to check for possible bare wires that might cause intermittent electrical short circuits.

Which bios version are you running?
Is your system overclocked?
Your power supply might be failing. How old is it? Has it been used a lot for extended time periods?
2 x 1GB of memory really isn't enough for win7, 4GB would be much better.

Can you borrow a lower end video card to test with?
Can you borrow a power supply to test with?

Download and create a bootable Linux diagnostic CD or DVD to test your system.
A web search using: linux diagnostic live cd will provide links and information.
You don't need to install Linux on your system, you'll run diagnostic programs from the optical drive to stress your system. If you have similar problems while running Linux, this means that there are some hardware issues with your system.

Hi profJim.

I've updated my forum profile with all the details I have. I'm not able to determine the BIOS version as I can't get into Windows - is there a way to check this from DOS?

I've checked all cables and wires - everything looks good. Also, computer runs fine with Windows XP (I wiped the hard drive and installed it again last night to check) and also in Windows 7 safe mode with network connection (was able to log in, get online and spent an hour digging around forums trying to work out what the problem is). I think it's safe to say there are no cables shorting out.

My installation was onto a fresh partition. Computer is not overclocked. It's running on the default BIOS settings.

Power supply is 4 years old. Unfortunately I don't have a lowerend graphics card to test with, but tested with a higher end card with no success. Also I don't have access to a second power supply.

Understand 2GB of RAM is the minimum. Planning on upgrading to more once I have Windows 7 up and running (that's the main reason I wanted to upgrade to a 64 bit OS).

Do you know what the Phase LEDs on the motherboard indicate? Also, would a 64-bit OS have a greater demand on the PSU?

XP has minimal memory requirements, win7 requires much more memory.
If you can boot into the bios, pressing F9 should display the bios version along with some additional information.
The post screen will display the bios version as Fx, where x = a number:

rev 1.0 and rev 2.0: 2, 3, ..., 11, 13
rev 2.1: 10, 11, 13

The motherboard revision number is in the lower rear bottom corner of your motherboard.

Gigabyte's phase LEDs usually indicate how much power your cpu is using.
The motherboard user manual might provide more information.

Double check your motherboard model name, there a are quite a few P35/EP35 models including some that are P35C.
Can you borrow an empty hard drive to temporarily install and test with win7?
Can you borrow a psu from a friend or another computer to test with?

It's unlikely that win7 requires significantly more power from your psu when you are idling at the desktop.
My P35-DS3L/E6300 (R0) overclocked system with 8GB of ram requires about 100 watts A.C. at the desktop.
With my 80plus gold rated power supply, my psu is providing about 90 watts D.C.
Right now with several programs running, my system is using about 115 watts A.C.
When I upgraded from win2k to win7, my P35 system required about the same amount of power.
Double check that your computer case speaker is mounted to that it can't vibrate against the computer case.

Have you loaded Optimized Bios Defaults in the bios at any time?
Copy the P35 bios template below into NotePad or any plain text editor and fill in the current bios settings.
Make sure to include any bios values in the bios and which settings are set to NORMAL or AUTO.
Ignore the current values that are in the template.
Post your completed bios template information.

In an attempt to fix the problem yesterday, I loaded the optimised BIOS values. Hopefully that was a good idea?

Last night I reinstalled Windows XP. The computer was running fine. This seems to confirm that the hardwarei s all fine, except there is something clashing with the Windows 7 drivers or config.

Now, when reinstalling Windows 7, I'm not able to fully complete set up because video output cuts out before I'm able to finish entering all my details (eg username, product key, etc).

Loading optimized bios defaults is the best way to go.
Your bios settings are fine, but....
....you said "BIOS version is F9. Motherboard is revision 2.1".
GIGABYTE - Motherboard - Socket 775 - GA-P35-DS3R (rev. 2.1) shows that F10 is the original bios release for your motherboard.
The cpu support list shows that bios version F10 is required for a Q6600 cpu and the bios date is 2007/12/19.

From winXP, run 4 different instances of cpu-z at the same time, where each window shows one of the following tabs:

cpu
mainboard
memory
SPD

Arrange the four windows in a 2x2 grid, and press the keyboard Print Screen key.
Open an image editing program and paste the screen image into the program.
Crop the 4 windows and discard the remainder of the screen.
Save the image as a JPG or PNG file and post the screen-shot in your next post.

If you really are running the F9 bios, it looks like you will need to flash the bios to F10, F11 or F13, but don't do this just yet.
For the rev 1.0 and 2.0 versions of your motherboard, the Q6600 cpu requires bios version F3 or F4 or higher!!

So...BIOS is definitely F9 and I double checked the motherboard. Rev 2.1 is printed in the lower back corner. Seems strange that this would be the case, but that's definitely what I'm seeing :S

Congratulations, your screen-shot shows that you weren't lying.

I don't know why XP is fine with bios F9 and win7 is having problems.

Updating to bios F13 might fix the problem.
Do NOT use @BIOS to flash the bios, use QFlash.
Download the F13 bios package from the downloads web page for your rev: 2.1 motherboard and extract the bios file which will have a file type = F13.
Copy this bios file to a floppy disk or usb drive that is formatted with FAT32, 16 or 12.
QFlash can't read an NFTS file system.
Boot into the bios and start QFlash.
Make sure that you set Keep DMI Data to disabled.

Be sure to immediately go into the bios after the flash completes and your system reboots and immediately load optimized bios defaults.
Post back before flashing if you have any questions.

If your hard drive has a FAT32 partition, you can copy the xxxxxxxx.F13 file to that partition where QFlash can easily read the bios file.

I've put the F13 file on my FAT32 USB, but when I go to QFlash it doesn't show up. I have gone to Update BIOS from Drive, Floppy B and it finds an empty folder. It's recognising the flash drive fine because the Total size is showing 7.46G. Is there anything else I need to put on the USB? I only copied the .F13 file

Just grabbed another USB drive and tried again. BIOS flashed successfully. Going to try installing Windows 7 again now. Fingers crossed!

USB drives can sometimes be a hit or miss situation.
Call me old fashioned, but I've never had a problem when flashing from a flopsy drive.
I'm holding my breath waiting for the win7 install results with your updated bios....

Looking good so far! I don't want to jynx it, but Windows installed successfully in 10 minutes, and the computer has been running for the last 15 minutes with no issues. I'm starting to load on a few programs, so will see how it progresses. Will post back here later to let you know how it's going :)
