  • X58A-UD3R r2 Needs several attempts to start

I’ve been running my X58A-UD3R rev.2 machine, a daily worker, for 2 years or so.
It sleeps each night and wakes each morning with a mouse click.
Just recently, it will not respond, so I push the main power button, the red light flickers and no start.
It simply flickers on, goes off, and will not even flicker again until I flip the PSU switch off for a bit.
After repeated attempts, it eventually starts normal.
I do note some yellow and green lights in the DDR voltage bank when it is dead, these do turn off once the system finally boots.
No software errors are showing up.
Is this simply a case of bad Power Supply? It never misses a beat under use conditions.
I’m sure this is a duplicate post, but I couldn’t find a similar thread.

can you see how much auto is using for qpi/vtt? it will be in the bios or look in easytune/tuner/voltage 1

you might need anywhere from 1.35-1.58v qpi/vtt with 12gb,may need even more

Re: X58A-UD3R r2 Needs several attempts to start

well last time it was running (yesterday) voltage readouts looked fine. Can't get it to power up today.
              I've tried several things:
              different wall plug
              reset bios
              checked RAM with memtest
re-seated RAM, vido and power to mb
tried to boot with all power unplugged except mb, c:

When it was running, it was flawless, I may just go pick-up another psu

it could be psu,if it was running fine before and not now then somethings a miss,i just though it might be unstable due to low qpi/vtt voltage but you said it was running fine before

did you try clearing the cmos? this will reset the bios/oc settings to default

yes, it has a little button on the back to reset bios.

Now it is acting different, it turns on for a second, then off, then repeats 4 seconds later, continuosly

                            a bit more on this.
You can do a simple test to confirm your psu is funky.
Disconnect all the plugs, except one case fan.
Connect the green wire to black in the big connector.
Turn it on. It should run normal.
In my case it did the same as when connected to the mb, on then off.

that's not really accurate, computer PSU's are switching power supplies, they require load to acknowledge that there is something to turn on as a safety. if there is no load (or enough for the certain design) the PSU will try to start, see no load and then shutdown.

the PSU will do the same thing if it is overloaded on startup, shutdown and try to recover.

it's a tricky one to diagnose and changing it is the easiest way yo know for sure.

glad you got it sorted out.
