    • Re: Socket 771 Mod Xeon X5460 GA-P35-DS3L Overclock

First thing is to change Performance Enhance = Turbo to Standard.

This means that you will need to manually set tRD and possibly tRFC.

      Set System Memory Multiplier = 2.00D for 2 x 422 = 844MHz.

Set the primary memory timings to 5-5-5-18 for now and dram voltage = 2.16 - 2.22

Set tRD = 11 for both memory channels; you might be able to lower this one or two clicks later on.

You can safely set Cpu PLL = 1.59 or 1.61

With 1.35000 cpu vcore and LLC enabled, you can safely set VTT (Cpu Termination) to 1.28; up to 1.32 shouldn't hurt your cpu for short term testing.

You most certainly will need to increase MCH Core, probably to the 1.24 to 1.28 range; up to 1.36 is safe but probably not needed.

All of these possible settings don't even begin to deal with clock skews or GTL reference settings.

Changing and testing one thing at a time will take forever.
This would be my best SWAG for a starting point:
      • System Memory Multiplier = 2.00D
      • Performance Enhance = Standard
      • primary memory timings to 5-5-5-18
      • tRD = 11 for both memory channels
      • tRFC = 64
      • Cpu PLL = 1.61
      • VTT = 1.30
      • MCH Core = 1.26

Absolutely do not set Cpu PLL or VTT to AUTO!!!

Before you try any of these changes, save a copy of your current bios to a FAT formatted floppy or usb drive.
If you "lose" your bios, it's possible that your backup bios chip might not save you.
Keep your FAT formatted disk installed in your system; I've seen the dreaded "searching for a copy of your bios" message and this is the last thing that you want to see.

      Have I scared you? GOOD!!!
It's remotely possible to "lose" your bios and buying a pre-flashed bios chip requires soldering the new chip to your motherboard.

Did you ever test with higher cpu core voltage and LLC disabled to see how this affects core temperatures?

Your advice is always greatly appreciated Jim!

I haven't tested with higher cpu core voltage and LLC disabled yet, would you recommend I do that first?

Also, do you think I should re-run at stock settings and do a RealTemp sensor test to see if I have any 'stuck' sensors?

        • Re: Socket 771 Mod Xeon X5460 GA-P35-DS3L Overclock

Did you notice your recent HWiNFO display for each of the Core #X Thermal Throttling entries where it shows YES in the Maximum and Average columns?

Reread the RealTemp Sensor Test documentation so that you understand value of the test.
All of our cores are stuck, at least at the low end of the scale. With my C2D E6300 (R0) cpu, the lowest core 0 reading was 40o(C) and core 1's lowest reading was 35o(C) at stock and with all o/c settings. The RealTemp sensor test is useful, but it looks like your cpu is throttling near the 85o mark with your TjMax modified display.

I would go back to your 3.80GHz stable setup and and find a stable setup with LLC disabled with the lowest stable cpu core voltage which will naturally be higher than the LLC enabled cpu settings. Then you can compare the difference in maximum core temperatures for LinX and/or a 30 minute or longer Prime95 Small FFT test. On my system I've found that while running the Prime95 Blend test, the small FFT tests (less than ~128K) average about 4o(C) higher than the larger FFT tests. The most meaningful results will be with the hotter running tests.

I've read about some users that are sometimes able to lower some of their cpu related voltage settings with the "optimal" modified MCH and/or Cpu Reference settings. I can't give you specific advice as to what reference values might help you with better stability and/or lower voltages and temperatures.

I did post earlier that it appears that quad core MCH (and maybe Cpu) reference volt settings that are around 70% of stock 1.20 VTT setting can sometimes improve stability and might help lower cpu temperatures with lower settings. There is always the higher end AIO water cooling setups that cost ~$120 or more and you would probably lower core temperatures by 5o - 7o(C).

As you were typing that I loaded the stock Xeon settings and ran the sensor test and the system froze at the end of the test (I hope this isn't a sign of CPU degradation, but only time will tell). I have since read over the documentation and see that the test isn't really helpful at this moment.

I have now re-loaded my 3.8GHz settings with LLC disabled but kept vcore the same (as a kind of null hypothesis that it should therefore fail).

I'm about to run LinX to see how it copes, results to follow...

Look at your last CPU-Z screen. You lowered your vcore from 1.328v to 1.264v, so don't expect it to be stable :P

If you disabled LLC then you need to increase vcore to compensate for the vdrop.

But first I'm gonna' let the system cool for 15-30 mins.

In the meantime, this is for Jim:

I think the verify function might be for a paid-for version of Macrium Reflect only?

Well you made a great call on LLC. In disbelief I tried disabling it myself and it literally made a breakthrough in my OC'ing progress. probably the mobo was being stressed too much with trying to keep the voltage steady, plus, inevitable voltage spikes in stress testing meant higher temps. Right now testing it at 4217Mhz with vcore at 1.416v idle; ~1.36v full load, bios ~1.46v.
X5460 E0. I figured I need to test the RAM and CPU seperately, LGA775 mobos are typically very picky about DDR3, even the smallest change can either make it fully stable or cause bsods (f.e. atm only 400mhz strap looks stable REGARDLESS of selected RAM ratio). Now prime95@blend and OCCT are general system tests and they won't tell you if it's a CPU or RAM failing. So my combo at the moment is prime95@8k + HCI Memtest (preferably 150-200% pass). CPU so far confirmed to be somewhat stable (passed prime95 8k for 20min so I'am pretty sure it won't cause errors with HCI "real life" load), now testing the memory and if it's okay will run some "polishing" tests and save the OC profile. :)<style id="pageBrightnessCustomCSS">body{zoom:106%!import ant;}</style>

I'm glad to hear that you are both making progress with LLC disabled.

Thanks, I'm not always right but I'm never wrong.

Check out AnandTech | Overclocking Intel's New 45nm QX9650: The Rules Have Changed and the following page to better understand vdroop.
The complete article is a must read for anyone doing high/extreme overclocks with LGA775 systems.

A general guideline is that Prime95 errors with FFT < 128K are usually cpu errors and larger FFT errors are usually memory related errors.
Earlier in this post I said that HCI Memtest was not as demanding as Prime95. I had several configurations that passed extended HCI Memtest runs but my system felt jerky and rough. Followup Prime95 testing proved that these configurations were not stable.

When you disabled LLC you need to increase cpu vcore to compensate for the vdroop.
                            Correct!
I think that you will find that vdroop, the difference between idle and full loads will be about 0.04 - 0.06 volts.
The difference in cpu voltage between the value displayed in the bios and at the desktop with no additional load is vdrop.

Cpu PLL will probably need to be set at 1.59 or 1.61, 1.57 will probably not be stable.
VTT will probably need to be set 0.05 volts lower than Cpu Vcore.

Here are some images from the AnandTech article:

A 6 hour Prime95 Blend test means that half of the time it was testing with Small FFT sizes and half of the time was testing with Large FFT sizes.
I'm surprised that the Large FFT test failed so quickly after your Blend test ran error free for 6 hours.

At this point including the Memset SPD panel is worthless.
It's important that you always include the ET6 --> Advance --> Voltages window to confirm some of the applied settings.

Run your test with Cpu PLL = 1.59 and see if runs error free.
tRD = 9 for each memory channel with 824MHz memory speeds might be required.
You might need to increase MCH Core to 1.22 or 1.24 volts.

You might need to set cpu vcore up one or two notches to 1.38125 or 1.38750 volts.

It's hard to read some of your screen-shot details with your current layout.
Right click and copy your posted screen-shot, paste it into your image editing program and then enlarge the image and you will see how poor the quality is.
I always save my screen-shots using the PNG file format to improve image quality.
The forum will automatically convert the uploaded PNG file to compressed JPG format.
Repeatedly saving the same JPG file format while you are making edits will result in significant image degradation.

Use your image editing program to create a narrower image with some of the information windows stacked vertically.
I use the IrfanView freeware program to quickly and easily enlarge the canvas size on the bottom of the original image and then copy & paste individual window screen-shot information windows to a selected image area of the newly created blank screen area. It's really quite easy with a little practice.
