Fixing to buy new hsf..one problem.

I have an intel p4 1.5 ghz proc, thing is though how do I identify which intel socket model I have? 423 or 478?:confused:

P4 Williamate Cores only come in socket 423. All Northwood CPUs/CPUs built after Jan 1st 2002 use Socket 478, all pre 2002 use socket 423. Also, u can pull open your case, and if there is a huge assemably holding up ur HSF system, then its a pretty safe bet that its a 478

I have a pretty friggin huge assembly holding the gigantic heatsink in place. Its like 4 inches wide and 4-5 inches tall(heatsink) and the assembly holding it on are these two clips that go on each side.

I thought my proc was a 423 pin (williamate), until I looked at there charts and spec finder, and it turns out of I have a really early version of a 478-pin, designated by my FC-PGA2 packaging (found out by the CPU frequency ID program they provide), and I only have an aluminum passive heatsink on mine. It's always a good idea to get your info from the manufacturer :afro: . : peace2: Mista K6
