Geforce 7950 GT Help

Hey I recently built a new sytem with this card. I was running games flawlessly for a week. Mostly FFXI but last night I noticed a bunch of problems with my video. Its all choppy around the edges. I could see lines/boxes in the sky of on the ground. And sometimes I would see parts of the game like flikker. Or I would see some white dots next to the lines.

I tried everything I could think of to fix this issue. Old drivers, new drivers, beta drivers. I messed with ingame settings as well as the nvidia settings. I also tried a different monitor. I dont know if its relevent but I have a duo core 3800+ and an asus motherboard, 550watt PSU. Heres a few picks ill add to show you. You might have to zoom in to see it.

See the line on the ground and the boxes. Also if you look at my character it is choppy .

Made sure I tested a different game as well to see if the problem was only in FFXI. This is halo

It looks like you may have accidentally adjusted some of the advanced settings for the video card. I haven't used nVidia in years, but I know that the ATI boards have the advanced settings under the Catalyst Control Center... possibly your board has something similar? That would account for the blocky appearance at least.

Hmm I was messing with some of those settings but not until after I noticed the problem. It was working fine for a week.

I would also like to add that I did some overclocking to my CPU from the bios. I did no overclocking to my card tho so idk... I just clocked my cpu from 2gig to 2.4gig. I messed with no voltages.

Sounds like you have some artifacts. Possibly u got a bad card out of the bunch or the drivers are not out yet that will fi those problems since those cards are a week old. So i would say wait for the new nvidia drivers to come out and if it doesnt fix yuor problem you might have to send the video card back for new one that works. I had the same problem for my 2 7950gx2s whenb they came out and it worked better after new drivers came out. ocing wont effect ur cards.

If thats the case then why did it work perfectly fine for a whole week after I bought it. As for the drivers I have the most recent ones from nvidia, and I tried beta drivers.

Did you remember to lock the PCI-E bus to its default speed?

I didnt touch anything for pci e in my bios. I raised the cpu from 200 to 240 and set the multipier thing to X4. I read thats hows its done for this same schip in another thread. Went from 2.0 to 2.4. It ran fine, ran into no problems at all. Only thing I remember installing around the time the card went bad was a windows update.

You may not have changed anything relating to the PCI-E bus, but unless you lock it at its default speed, your raising of the FSB will also raise all busses that rely on that setting... which includes the PCI and PCI-E busses. Some motherboards automatically lock in the speeds to default and you have to manually override this feature, others automatically adjust the respective busses when you crank up the FSB.

As soon as I noticed having any problems I set it back to the defaults. The problem still happened regardless. Unless it was permanant damage?? I set the settings back nothing. Then when that didnt work I pull the bios battery to reset completly.

by the way, theres a better way to reset the bios. its called the CMOS reset jumper.

anyway, back on topic, you could try reinstalling directx, cause if the update involved this, it may have screwed up under the overclock. just an idea, and if im right, you may need to use a specialist tool to uninstall directx first.

If all else fails, do a complete fresh install of windows. Also, make sure you unplu the power supply when you pull the CMOS battery since the motherboard can draw power that way to maintain CMOS settings. But I would do a fresh install and see what happens. If that doesn't help, something is fubared. Try the card in another PC too. THat will tell you if it is injured.
