  • windows update stops working

I just used the method as described by Cameron Wilmot on this site to install XP SP1. However, when I go back to Windows Update website, it asks me to install the new windows update software. But after I click 'yes' to install, it goes back the start page and ask me to install again. Obviously it's not installing the program. Does anyone know how I could solve this problem? Thanks in advance.

You were more fortunate that I have been. I did the same, when the 2 popups came up telling me I had to install the Windows Update software, and I clicked yes to both. Then, I came to a page that told me Windows Update had been upgraded, and I needed to upgrade along with it. I found this a little suspicious, so I just closed my IE window (the only one open). I opened another one to go to tweaktown and astalavista and read up on any similar user experiences and my computer froze. When I restarted, it reset my computer just as WinXP was booting up. This happened 2 or 3 more times (including safe mode), and I just said screw it to take a break. I'm on a friend's computer now, I dunno what will happen when I try to boot up again. If anyone else has had this experience let me know.

      I have the solution

go to the address bar at the top of your browser and change http:// to httpS:// and then reload the update page select yes to the updates and you will then be asked to re-boot.

All should then work after the reboot.

This seemed to be a general Microsoft problem, not the SP1 fix.
